Teachers are experts at communicating necessary information to students, gauging and evaluating how well the lesson has landed, and then implementing different strategies to reach students who need different learning styles. School districts need to be equally responsive and proactive in delivering messages to their various audiences. Douglas ESD began its communications department in June 2014, offering districts a new service to help reach their various publics and audiences.
Our communications specialists work with districts to increase the level of knowledge and understanding in the community on district affairs, teacher innovations and student success.
The communications department works with districts and ESD staff to find and implement strategies that broaden local communities’ understanding of the myriad of changes to education in Oregon. This includes learning how these changes affect districts, parents and students. Our communications department seeks out and researches successful strategies and programs from other school communications and public relations programs nationwide. We present school districts with these options and offer opportunities to our Douglas County districts. We can then help districts develop and implement their own versions. Our membership in the Oregon School Public Relations Association and National School Public Relations Association connects us with resources and networking opportunities in the state and nation, which we can then share with and leverage for Douglas County school districts.
Douglas ESD communications services are also available to nonprofit and government agencies in the county through intergovernmental contracts. Through these contracts, we are able to grow and expand our department to better serve our school districts.
