Goals of the Project
 
 
 

·          Improve the teaching of American history in school districts served by the Douglas, 
 

      Jefferson, and South Coast Education Service Districts.

 

 

·          Promote change beyond the individual classroom by creating consistent pedagogical practices from elementary to high school and strong small learning communities.

 

 

·          Improve student achievement in U.S. history through the improvement in their teachers’ instructional practices and content knowledge.

 

 

·          Support school wide efforts to improve writing and reading scores 
 
 

 

Commitment of Participants 

 

 

      ·        Attend one, 5 day Summer Institute and two, 3 day Colloquia

 

 

·          Allow one site visit from Project Director in your classroom for the recording of the use of historical content presented during the professional development, primary source objects or documents, historical inquiry skills, and Oregon’s common curriculum goals and content standards in a standardized observation protocol, as well as mentoring and support in these areas.

 

 

·          Create lesson plans that incorporate a primary source object or document.

 

 

·          Complete forms for external evaluator, pre and post-test. 
 
 

 

 Benefits to Participants 

 

 

      ·          3 graduate credits available from Willamette University for $135

 

 

·          $650 towards purchasing primary source objects and documents

 

 

·          $750 stipend for completion of grant activities and assignments

 

 

·          Meet and travel with historians, museums, and historical society partners

 

 

·          Receive Professional Development credit

 

 

·          Stipend workdays for non-contract days

 

 

·          Paid substitute coverage to your district

 

 

·          Paid mileage, per diem, and hotel accommodations

 

 

·          Increase your knowledge of American history by attending quality professional development         workshops
